Want your website to get “Googled?” Here are 15 easy ways to increase the Search Engine Optimization SEO of your site. Keep them in mind for every new post or page you create.
Titles…
1. Should contain main keywords
2. Should be less than 65 characters in length
3. Should avoid generic words like “a” “if” “the” then” “and” “to”, etc.
4. Should only use letters, numbers, hyphens “-“ and commas “,”
Excerpts…
5. Should contain the most enticing information
6. Should be between 25-35 words in length
7. Should use letters only (no symbols)
Content…
10. Should be 300-700 words (per post/page) in length
11. Should be UNIQUE
12. Should add be added as frequently as possiable (try setting weekly goals – i.e. 1 new post per day)
Tags…
8. Should be 5-10 keywords
9. Should also be found in the content
Navigation…
13. Should have as many internal links as possible (and while you’re at it external too!)
14. Should keep links updated – meaning fixing or eliminating broken external, and definitely internal, links
Sitemaping (a little more advanced)…
15. Should have both a XML sitemap (the easiest way to do this in Wordpress is to: use a plugin) AND a Static sitemap (which is a page with links to every other page–there are also tools and plugins to help you with this)
Great content deserves to be read, so make it easy for people to find by catering to the preferences of search engines like Yahoo or Bing. There are many resources on SEO out there–from articles, to plugins, to national conferences (just Google “SEO”). It can all be a bit overwhelming. But by just following the easy tips above, you are taking one big step toward a higher SEO ranking.
