ST. LOUIS, MO: November 5, 2009 — Supporters of Missouri-based Microfinancing Partners in Africa (MPA) are always coming up with innovative ways to raise funds for the organization, but one of the most amazing projects was put together by a 10-year-old girl. Claire Maher of St. Louis has written and published a children’s book with half of the royalties benefiting MPA, a non-profit organization that provides micro business loans in Uganda and Kenya.

The idea for Claire’s venture, “Puff’s Island Escape,” came earlier this year when the librarian at Incarnate Word Cathcolic Elementary School organized a story-writing contest. Judges awarded Claire well-written work to be displayed in the school library and her idea grew from there.

Puff’s Island Escape is a colorfully-illustrated adventure paperback short-story with a positive message. The book is selling for $10.95, and can be purchased through KidPub Press by calling 1-800-252-5224 or by visiting the online bookstore.

This is not the first time that Claire and her family have donated to MPA. Last year Claire and her 8-year-old sister, Hannah, collected coins and hand-delivered them to MPA’s founder and director, Sister Toni Temporiti, for her to take on her 2008 trip to Africa.

MPA loans help men and women to start small business. Even loans as small as $20 can bring a business into full production. Realistic financing terms, comprehensive training and the development of a community-based support network results in a very high percentage of on-time repayments. Ultimately, these thriving business communities provide the economic foundation for community development project, including schools, health centers and power sources.

In addition to Claire’s book proceeds, MPA recently collected $11,000 from the organization’s October Fast for Africa. Held in conjunction with the United Nation’s World Food Day, fast participants enlisted sponsors to make a donation in support of their fasting. MPA expects to reach its 2009 goal of raising $150,000.

For more on MPA, visit its website at www.microfinancingafrica.org.

Apart from letting supporters learn about the projects MPA has successfully supported over the last year, they also raised $111,000 throughout the evening and purchased 25 cows ((!) in support of the Uganda Cow Project, which supplies families with a cow. Cows offer a sustainable source of revenue and nutrition.

Responding to a specific need in the international community can be daunting. The scope of extreme poverty, lack of resources and civil war seem to engulf hope. Fortunately in St. Louis there is something powerful we can do to in response to the violence that erupted in Kenya following their presidential elections.

Microfinancing Partners in Africa, based in St. Louis and founded by Sister Toni Temporiti, is a not-for-profit working to provide small loans to African men and women. These loans are used to start small businesses that will sustain a strong economic and community infrastructure.

In the wake of the instability caused by political turmoil, Sr. Temporiti has been in constant contact with microfinancers and friends in Kenya. Ingrid Munro, President of microfinancing partner Jamii Bora, has this to say about the significance of microfinancing efforts in Kenya:

“What has taken our people so long to build has been destroyed in one week. But what cannot be burned, stolen, or destroyed is the new confidence, the knowledge, and the self assurance that [we have]. What has been destroyed in a short time will be rebuilt with help from people like you.”

Very often loans as small as $20 bring a business into full production. Realistic microfinancing terms, comprehensive training and the development of a community-based support network result in an impressive 95% repayment rate. This funding system provides the financial basis for the provision of additional training, loans and business creation. Ultimately, these thriving business communities provide the economic foundation for community development projects, including schools, health centers and utilities.

This February 9th, 2008, Microfinancing Partners in Africa will have their annual fundraising gala at the Sunset Hills Country Club. A Champaign Reception is at 6 pm, Dinner is at 7 pm with an Oral and Silent Auction to follow. Some of the generous donations that will be auctioned are as follows:

2 hand-made Adirondack chairs

An evening of hors d’oeuvres and martinis hosted by Rev. John Rogers Vien

Vacation package: 2 Southwest Airline tickets and night at Drury Hotel Inn

Dinner for 6 at Trattoria Marcella and flowers by Ladue Florist

Sailing trip in Alton, Missouri

In-home Chocolate tasting by Bissinger’s

5 VIP tickets to a Cardinal’s game with parking, food and drinks included

2 Reactor Brand Watches

An Oriental rug

One night at Charleyville Winery and Microbrewery Bed & Breakfast

A variety of complimentary memberships to some of Missouri’s favorite destinations

Gifts of any size have tangible benefits to Kenyans, but even more that meeting physical needs your support provides the priceless resource of hope. Table sponsorship are $1500 (includes 10 seats, wine and dinner). Individual tickets are $60, and for those unable to attend, donations can be made year-round at www.microfinancingafrica.org.

Note: 40% of ticket is tax-deductible, and any additional contributions are 100% tax-deductible. Please make checks payable to Microfinancing Partners In Africa and mail to Sr. Toni Temporiti, 4949 Columbia Avenue, St. Louis, MO 63139.

###

Microfinancing Partners in Africa is a 501c(3) that provides grants for the strengthening and expansion of microfinancing programs. The resources are used to empower Africa’s most destitute individuals to lift themselves out of poverty with dignity through access to financial services and education. MPA and its supporters seek to completely eradicate extreme poverty in Africa to allow every person their fundamental right to direct their own future.
