The mysterious origins of the Norton grape, America’s oldest and arguably finest contribution to wine production, have led many wine historians in circles; chasing ghosts of its cultivation as far as the vineyards at Monticello. Through recent discoveries, this much is true: The Norton grape was indeed cultivated first by its namesake Dr. Daniel Norborne Norton between 1823 and 1828 in what is now Richmond, VA.

This fall, wine and food lovers are invited to gather to celebrate this notable grape at the Missouri History Museum in Forest Park (Lindell and Debaliviere) for the first annual Norton Wine Festival. VIP tickets are $35 and include additional tastings of vertical flights from past top Norton vintages.

Devastated by the loss of his wife and infant in 1821, Norton immersed himself in the garden that would originate America’s finest red wine. Sketches and descriptions of Norton’s garden indicate that the lost variety Bland grape was the mother vine, possibly grafted with vitis labrusca or aestralis, both native to North America. With only descriptions of the Bland variety to work with, however, it is impossible to determine the Norton grape’s parentage. Despite these obscure origins, the Norton grape has received great acclaim, with Missouri leading production.
