On Saturday, April 19 the Columbia Civic Orchestra will premiere a new work titled Caustic Ride by Missouri composer Patrick Dell. The piece is part of the orchestra’s “New Directions” concert, which will include works by Sibelius and Sarasate. Music director Stefan Freund will conduct the concert, which features violinist Eva Szekely.
Commissioning a work is a new venture for the Columbia Civic Orchestra, a volunteer group dedicated to providing enjoyment for its members and audiences with the presentation of symphonic music. As a partner organization to the Missouri Theatre Center for the Arts, the orchestra endeavors to develop and inspire local talent in classical orchestral and chamber music.
Dell’s work was commissioned by the Columbia Civic Orchestra and the Sinquefield Family Foundation. Dell previously was awarded the inaugural Sinquefield Composition Prize in 2006 for his piece, Eidolon for Wind Ensemble, which premiered at the 2006 Chancellor’s Concert at the University of Missouri.
The Sinquefield Composition Prize provides students the opportunity to write original works to be performed by the University of Missouri’s premier large ensembles. The contest is open to any University of Missouri undergraduate or graduate student and is judged by composers from outside the University’s School of Music. Music students who win a Sinquefield award are both honored and challenged because their prize is a commission to write more music.
Dell, who graduated in December 2006 with a degree in music education from the School of Music, is currently a graduate student and also teaches music. During his undergraduate career he received a $3,000 University of Missouri Undergraduate Research Scholars grant in 2005 to study music in 55 video games.
The concert takes place at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 19 at Missouri United Methodist Church, 204 South Ninth Street. Tickets are $10 in advance and $15, at the door. For more information contact the Columbia Civic Orchestra at 573-815-9799 or CCOrchestra@fastmail.net.
