7 YOUTUBE “MUST DOS”

January 25th, 2010  |  Published in Our Industry: Slay Blog, The "High-Tech" Method

Youtube is by far the most popular video platform out there today.   A majority of individuals and businesses have already begun to upload and share their videos.  While it is very easy to create an account and upload, the hard part–as with most things on the web and everything in PR–is getting people to see it and to care.  Here are 7 basic, yet overlooked, tips for using YouTube, or really any video platform.

1.   DO research other videos that are out there and come up with a unique and interesting concept.  For example, how-to videos or spin-off’s of popular videos tend to have high viewership.  As with anything, the content and strategy have to be there.  The video should be entertaining, but also have a call or action or specific goal in mind.

2.   DO stay engaged and have a solid understanding of the community.  Build trust to get ratings, comments and links.  DON’T just post and leave.

3.   DO add comments with links to your video on related videos of others.

4.   DO put link to website, twitter, etc in the very first part of the description.

5.   DO brand your YouTube page and video–even beyond the color options YouTube provides.  After all, how tragic would it be to have people watch and even really like your video, but not remember who or what is behind it.  Just check out Coke’s Channel…see how you can’t forget that you are on the Coke Channel?

6.   DO use tagging—think of relevant keywords so you video can be found in searches.

7.   DO embed the video as much as possible.  Look into options for having a ‘featured’ video section, as well as an archive section.  There are many tools out there for embedding individual or groups of videos.  Just google around a little.  (For WordPress, I personally prefer  the TubePress Plugin.  See it in action here).  As for the Slay and Associates website, all the videos for our clients are archived under the “Client Video”.
